Individual Psychotherapy & Counseling

Princeton, NJ | Online Therapy in NJ, NY, PA, MA & IN

Therapy can be a place to slow down, become curious about yourself, and understand the patterns that may be keeping you stuck.

I’m Kim Atwood, MA, LPC, CST, a Licensed Professional Counselor and AASECT Certified Sex Therapist with over 20 years of experience working with adults. I provide individual psychotherapy in person in Princeton, New Jersey, as well as virtual therapy for individuals located in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Indiana.

My approach is holistic, engaged, collaborative, and creative. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, we'll look at the different parts of your life that influence how you feel and function—including relationships, emotions, your body, stress, sexuality, past experiences, and the ways you've learned to navigate the world.

Therapy That Looks at the Whole Person

You may come to therapy because something specific isn't working, or simply because you know you'd like something in your life to feel different.

You might be struggling with anxiety or stress, questioning a relationship, navigating a major life transition, feeling disconnected from yourself, or noticing the same patterns repeating despite your efforts to change them.

Individual psychotherapy can provide space to explore:

  • Anxiety, stress, and feeling overwhelmed
  • Relationship and family patterns
  • Self-esteem, confidence, and body image
  • Shame, self-criticism, and perfectionism
  • Boundaries and communication
  • Identity and personal growth
  • Life transitions and changing roles
  • Perimenopause, menopause, aging, and midlife changes
  • Grief, loss, and changes in relationships
  • Feeling disconnected, stuck, or uncertain about what comes next
  • Developing a healthier relationship with your body and sexuality
  • Creating greater authenticity, meaning, and satisfaction in your life

You don't need to fit neatly into a diagnosis or arrive with a clearly defined problem. Sometimes therapy begins with the recognition that the way you've been living, relating, or coping no longer fits who you are becoming.

My Approach is Holistic, Collaborative & Creative

Therapy isn't one-size-fits-all.

I work especially well with thoughtful, creative, curious, and self-motivated people who want to understand themselves more deeply and are willing to experiment with new ways of thinking, feeling, and relating.

Our work is interactive and collaborative. I'm not a therapist who simply sits back and listens without engaging. I'll ask questions, offer observations, help you notice patterns, and work with you to develop new ways of approaching the concerns that brought you to therapy.

Depending on what is useful for you, our work may include traditional talk therapy, mindfulness and mind-body awareness, creative exploration, psychoeducation, communication strategies, and exercises or practices to experiment with between sessions.

The goal isn't to turn you into someone different. It's to help you understand yourself more fully and develop greater freedom in how you respond to yourself, your relationships, and your life.

Relationships—with Others and With Yourself

Relationships are often an important part of individual therapy, even when you attend therapy alone.

We may explore your relationships with partners, family members, friends, or people from your past. Just as importantly, we may look at the relationship you have with your own body, thoughts, emotions, sexuality, needs, and sense of self.

Understanding these relationships can help make patterns that once seemed confusing much clearer.

From there, therapy becomes less about asking “What's wrong with me?” and more about understanding “Why does this make sense for me—and what would I like to do differently now?”

Sexuality Is Part of the Whole Person

Because I am also an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, sexuality doesn't have to become an off-limits subject in individual psychotherapy.

Sexuality may intersect with body image, relationships, confidence, identity, aging, health, shame, intimacy, or how comfortable you feel expressing your needs. We can talk openly about these experiences as part of understanding you as a whole person.

If a sexual concern is the primary reason you're seeking therapy—such as low sexual desire, erectile or ejaculation difficulties, difficulty reaching orgasm, painful sex, sexual performance anxiety, or other sexual functioning concerns—my Sex Therapy services provide more specialized treatment focused specifically on sexual health.

Looking for More Time—or Just One Focused Session?

A 90-minute Accelerated Therapy Intensive offers more uninterrupted time to explore a specific concern, understand recurring patterns, and develop practical next steps.

It can be used as an extended therapy session, but it can also stand alone. If you're not looking for ongoing therapy but would value a focused consultation with an experienced psychotherapist and Certified Sex Therapist, a single 90-minute session may be a good fit.

You might come with a specific sexual, relationship, or personal concern; a decision you're trying to make; a pattern you'd like help understanding; or simply a desire for a professional perspective. We'll use the extended time to clarify what's happening, explore relevant factors, and identify options and next steps. There is no expectation that you continue in weekly therapy afterward.

90-minute individual intensives are available in person in Princeton, New Jersey, and virtually for adults in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Indiana.
